4 Steps to Virus Protection for your Computer
1. Use Windows Update every week or so. In Window 98 and up you will find a button for updating in your start menu (usually found near the top).
2. Pay Attention! Don't open attachments that your are not expecting...especially if they are from strangers.
3. Virus Protect your software. Use and Anti-Virus program like Symantec's Norton or McAfee's Anti-Virus or PCillin. These are inexpensive and can be purchased at local computer stores or even on-line. If you would like a free antivirus, then you can use either Grisoft's AVG or AVAST. Both of these free scanners function all the time and automatically update themselves.
4. In order for the virus protection software to function properly you must update it OFTEN. Most of the software programs will do this automatically if you tell them to. Remember if you don't update your virus software it cannot know about newly discovered viruses.
Spyware/Adware are programs that run in the background of your computer. They keep track of where you go on the internet and generate pop-ups while you are viewing webpages. If your computer recently started to display an unusual amount of pop-up ads or has started to run very slowly, then spyware/adware may be the cause. If you follow our step-by-step instructions below to remove the spyware, and also scan your system for viruses then you should notice an increase in system performance.
1. Go to Download.com and do a search for Ad-Aware.
2. Download the file to your desktop and then open it to begin installing.
3. After installation, double click on the Ad-Aware icon on your desktop. You can delete the file that you installed Ad-Aware from if you wish.
4. Before running any scan, always click on the link for Ad-Aware to check for updates, and be sure to download the update if one is available.
5. To begin scanning, click on the Start button on the main page of the program.
6. It is recommended that you do a full system scan the first time you run Ad-Aware, and once every couple of months. For other periodic scans, the smart scan option is good enough. You should do a smart scan once every two weeks at the least.
7. After choosing a scanning option click on the Next button. Ad-Aware will begin to search for spyware/adware on your computer.
8. Once Ad-Aware has finished scanning, click the Next Button.
9. On the Scanning Results page click on the "Scan Summary" Tab. Put a Check in all boxes on this tab. Click NEXT. Click OK.
10. You may then exit out of the program. Restart the computer if Ad-Aware found it necessary to reboot in order to remove some items.
